In making this edit, I wanted to portray an aural image and mood that could both be identifiable and foreign simultaneously.  I had the image in mind of a solitary man walking through the city streets late at night in the rain.  He first passes by a club, with a rhythmic bass line pounding away in the background while a few motorcycles speed by.  Then, he comes across a bar emptying for the night, and a shady man loudly speaking to himself.  Finally the rain stops, and unfamiliar mechanical noises arise together to create a frightening mood when suddenly the man realizes that the scene has changed rapidly, which frightens him, but the fear gives way to his lucid acknowledgement of being in a dream.  I chose to incorporate various effects such as wahwah on the motorcycle noise and echo in the only recognizable voice to convey the dream like state of the entire piece.  Also, I chose to slowly ease in to the almost completely constant rain noise to suggest movement throughout.  Another decision I made was to quickly fade out the rain noise, and sharply fade in the mechanical noise reversed to build a sense of disorientation and growing fear.  In addition, I chose to pan the noise of numerous people murmuring to the left side of the speakers, and the noise of the man talking to the right side.  This assists in the fluidity of motion perceived as well as creating the theme of isolation leading into the dream sequence.  Finally, I used the envelope tool frequently to ensure the whole piece transitioned smoothly and fostered the mood all the way through.
